"My Generation" Receives Emmy Nomination and Lures the TV Industry

By MELENA RYZIK, NY Times

My GenerationLast Sunday, the TV show "My Generation," which runs weekly on PBS, lost the daytime Emmy for outstanding lifestyle programming. Its competition was fierce: "The Nate Berkus Show," from Oprah's home design guy; the Style Network's "How Do I Look?" and "The Martha Stewart Show," which took home the trophy. But for "My Generation," a show created by AARP, and aimed at viewers 50 and older, it was truly an honor just to be nominated.

David Pepper, the executive producer of "My Generation," said that the contest between TV veterans and his show, which has a full-time staff of just four people, was something of a David and Goliath battle, adding, "I think it really is a testament to how far we've come in a short period of time."

On the air since 2008, "My Generation" is a rarity. In an industry where youth often translates to profit, the show stakes out an audience far from the 18- to 34-year-old spectrum that advertisers and television executives typically crave. Instead, the 30-minute show, hosted by Leeza Gibbons, is meant to appeal to an older population, with health and wealth tips — Martina Navratilova on improving posture, say, or investment strategies from Jim Cramer — and profiles of high-achieving people or celebrities, along with segments on Alzheimer's, care-giving and strokes.

America NowJune 2011
I’m really excited to be joining America Now – it’s the perfect fit for me at the perfect time.  There is a great staff in place, amazing producers and executives and it’s now launching five days a week this September, after a year long success airing once a week with Bill Rancic. (love him)  Bill and I will be delivering information you can put to use in your life right away.

This is the kind of news magazine format I love best.  Helping viewers become smarter, safer, stronger and more empowered.  Now that we live in a time where we all have to be our own advocates in EVERYTHING, we all need a show like this.  So from finance to fitness; health and beauty to travel and time savers – we are on it!

My personal thanks to Raycom, ITV and Devmar – the powerful trio which has teamed up to deliver this new syndicated show, American Now, five nights a week.  We are already way into production and can’t wait to see you on the air!

Thanks to the entire team at the Fran Dresher Show!  I had a blast visiting with her and saw so many people I love, including director Hal Grant (who used to direct my show) and her producer Scott Sternberg.

We talked about many things on the show including my new support initiative for caregivers includes tips, advice on coping and staying healthy and stories from fellow Alzheimer’s caregivers all available at www.AlzheimersDisease.com.
